Getting Started with Project Bob

Items

You will begin the game with a set of newbie armor, (type eq to see what you are wearing), along with a backpack, shovel, and weapon (type inv to see what you are carrying). Equip your weapon, put your shovel in the backpack, and then type read book for any books have (if any).

You will also notice a Recycle Bin and a Smelter. These are special containers that can be used to speed up loot management. Anything you wish to sell or destroy should be put in the recycle bin, then type empty to not only wipe the items, but also receive payment for them. The smelter is where you should put any materials you find such as iron or steel. Type melt to break down these items into base materials as well as combine any pieces of like material into a larger one. Save these for later when you begin upgrading your better items. Typing quicksort will automatically sort all the items in your inventory, and place them into the appropriate containers for you.

Your Character

Typing score will display your most important stats. Hitpoints, damage, combat stats and your 8 Attributes. Combat stats directly influence your performance in combat while attributes increase these stats and improve your skill levels (type skill). The higher your total skill, the better that skill performs in all ways. To find out what stats affect a certain skill group, type data sg (name of skill group). For example: data sg dagger.

  • Generally speaking, you will be fighting with some combination of techniques (melee type commands), and/or by casting spells.

To see the techniques you have learned, type abilities. This will list all your skills. If they can be used, they will have an AP or action point cost. Otherwise they are passive and will be in effect constantly. To execute an ability, find the name of the ability in the list you just displayed, then type tech <name>. Some abilities, such as racial skills, don't require the tech command. These are listed in a separate column below your techniques. Just type the name of the ability to use it.

To see the spells you have learned, type spell. This will list any spells you have learned. To be able to cast a spell, you must first be skilled enough with the correct magic type. Type prac to see how skilled you are in any particular skill group. Typing prac <group name> will raise your skill level. (Any time you raise your total skill level, all spells within that group do more damage, last longer, etc.). Next, you must read the appropriate spell book. Spell books can be purchased from the wizard in the Magic Shop in Midgaard (recall, 2s2wn). Reading a spellbook increases the level of that spell. While at the Magic Shop, type read sign for more information. To use a spell, type cast <spellname> <target>. Read help cast for more details.

Character Points

You begin with a few perk points and many skill points. Skill points are used to practice your skill groups (type prac). The best rule of thumb is to practice your starting skills to five at first. Skills take more skill points per practice the higher their level, so you will want to distribute your points evenly to start. You aren't limited to the five skills you chose in creation. You can use the learn command to add new skills as well as upgrade current ones. Type learn at the Oracle for a list of possibilities. Each new skill will cost you skill points to learn, so it's not a good idea to learn things you aren't going to use. Wait until your primary skills are well developed before branching out into new areas, unless you're addressing a specific need (such as needing more healing or defensive ability to survive).

For at least a few levels, you should spend your perk points on Attributes. Type pl att (meaning perklist attributes) to see the general list. Then, for example, type pl str (meaning perklist strength) to see the perklines you can spend your points on, and the cost. There are two ways to do this: for example, type pb str (meaning perkbuy strength) or train strength. Next, type pb confirm, or repeat your first command. There are hundreds of perks, so this confirmation is very useful to ensure you get what you desire. For more useful commands and information, type help perks. Continue training attributes until you're ready for bigger decisions, and then check out the Advanced Gameplay section for info on other perk choices.

Experience and Levels

You're going to find you are stronger than creatures of your level, but that won't stop you from earning experience for defeating them. An easy place to start hunting is up and south from recall. You will need to type open south to get past the door. Kill the boars, lizards and rabbits until you level a few times.

If you want to be more adventurous, you could start using the area command to see what other places you might visit. Type area 15 to see a list of all areas that are recorded with mobs around level 15. Newer areas usually have directions and other information when you type help <area name>. Good places to start are help kobo and help haon.

As you fight, try casting any spells you know or using skills (techs). If things get ugly, don't be afraid to type flee. Then you can type sleep to rest up and stand when you're healthy. Healing is very fast while sleeping so you should experience little downtime. Sooner or later you're going to die. There's nothing to worry about, you will be sent to the Healer's room one north of Hassan. Here you can rest, or pay the healer to heal you by typing heal. You won't lose experience or drop any of your items or gold. So the only cost of death is the time spent recovering from your death, a minute or two.

Leveling will reward you with more skill points, perk points and stats like hitpoints and mana. You will also be able to wear higher level equipment. Type eqstat to see a detailed list of your current items. At the top of this list it will indicate the maximum quality level of items you can currently wear. Keep an eye out for better items. When you wear an item, you will see how it alters your stats. Go for as much green as possible. You may see the full stats on any item by typing id <name of item> if the item is in your inventory, or idwear <name of item> if it is equipped. Hard to decide? Typing wear best will automatically equip the best rated items in your inventory.

After you've earned a few levels, you should also have enough gold to visit the Magic Shop and buy the portal book. This will make traveling and your upcoming quests much easier.

Quests & Exploration

Project Bob is a very quest-based game. You will find a lot to do. There are two primary types of quests are: Bounty Hunting and Story/Goal based quests. The bounties are random, while stories are predesigned, and usually can only be done once for a significant prize. Both types are worth your time.

To undertake bounties, visit the Questmaster (SEU from recall). Type look, and you will see a list of what the Questmaster offers. You may undertake a quest to hunt down a single mob, groups of mobs (you may overlap up to three of this type for greater rewards), or special missions, and have your own personal dungeon generated and filled with mobs and loot.

The other types of quests require you to find a Quest giver and say the right words to trigger their quest. You have two easy choices at low levels, Artemus in the Cleric's guild, and Grahm in the Fighter's Guild. Visit Artemus and say 'loyal' to begin his quest. For Grahm, say 'fight'. At any time during one of these quests, you may use the task or objective command to get more information. Type task info to see a recap of your mission, with a tip on how to complete it. Objective will show your current progress. These tasks are saved when you log out, so you can continue them anytime you like. This means it's good to accept any tasks you come across even if they may be too hard to finish right away. Typing task list will show you a list of your tasks.
