New Player Guide
From Project Bob
New To Muds?
If you have never played a MUD before, it is a Multi-User Dungeon or Domain. It is a text-based computer game. You log into the game by creating a character and explore various lands, defeat monsters and enemies (alone or in groups), become more powerful, chat with others who are logged into the game, and, most importantly, have a good time.
Movement
When you are playing on a mud, you are only in one room at a time. Rooms are how the game breaks the world into manageable chunks. You can (under normal circumstances) only interact with objects and characters that are in the same room as you are in. Rooms have 'exits' that lead to other rooms. Typing exit will show you what exits you have to choose from. These exits exist in 6 different directions, north, south, east, west, up, and down. By typing the direction you want to move, if an exit exists, you will move to the room that is in that direction. Typing look in a room will show you what the room looks like, as well as which objects and characters you can interact with in the room with you. To open a door, type open <direction>. To unlock a door, providing you have the correct key, type unlock <direction>.
Communication
Communication is another aspect of the game. It allows you to ask for help, cooperate, share knowledge, and generally makes the game more fun. There are many ways to communicate here on Project Bob. Some are public, and some are private. The most commonly used are:
- tell <player name> <message> will send a private message to that person.
- OOC, gossip, and shout are ways to speak to everyone online at once. The gossip channel is generally reserved for roleplay global messages.
- Yell will send a message to ever player in a specific area.
- Who and whom show you who is online. Who will give an IC (in character) list of who is online where as whom will be a OOC (out of character) player list.
- If you are grouped with players can you type gtalk <message> for only those grouped to hear your comments. Type group to see who's in your current group.
- If you happen to join a clan, you can speak in the clan channel by typing ctalk <message>.
Objects
An object is something in the world that a character can interact with. The most used commands for objects are:
- Get <item> lets you pick up an object that is in the same room as you, or that is in a container near you.
- Look <item> will sometimes give you useful information.
- Examine <item> is similar to look.
- Identify <item>will display the stats of a certain item.
- Wear <item> (also hold and wield do the same thing) lets you equip an object.
- Remove <item> is used to stop using the object.
- Put <item> lets you put one object into another. Only some objects can have things stored inside them.
- Drop <item> puts an object that you have into the room you are in.
- Inventory shows you what objects you are carrying.
- Eq shows you what objects you are wearing and wielding.
Characters
There are two types of characters. There are players (PCs), like you, that are people playing the game. You can get a lot of information about your character by typing score. The second type is computer controlled mobiles, commonly called mobs. Mobs are the characters you will interact with during your adventures. The biggest reason for mobs to exist is to give players something to fight. You advance in the game by gaining experience, which is primarily done through killing mobs. Also, killing mobs lets you take any objects or money that the mob had. You also gain experience through specially programmed mob-run quests. There are many mobs that exist to serve needed duties, such as bankers, shopkeepers, healers, etc.
Getting Help
Typing help will give you a list of help categories.
Typing commands will give you a list of the more important commands.
Ask other players or immortals (staff) if you have questions or need help using the question or tutor channels. You will find that other people on the mud are very friendly and helpful.
